Dear Sarah,

It's getting late on Christmas Eve. Adelaide and Charlotte are reading the books I got them for that Icelandic thing we do now (I've just put mine down), mum is reading something else and Michael has gone to bed. Mimi and Adam have taken Hank home which is a relief to the cats.

It's been a good day thus far, the Ham was as good as last year but not as big so there'll be less cold sadly. It's only now, after a frantic build-up, and the party, that I've found a moment to reflect. Of course I miss you dreadfully - do you have any idea how much work this is for one person to keep on top of? Of course you do, I know there were years that I was less than totally helpful but I got there in the end didn't I? Wasn't last year perfect? How were we to know it'd be your last?

The tree is loaded with presents as ever, which has provided an adventure playground for Dinah/Miss Mischief. Getting it from Wyld's Farm was different this year - I took the girls (and Hank) on a Saturday and it was so much busier at the weekend, including a £2 entrance fee. Our tree this year was the furthest away so we hitched a lift back with it on the tractor bus thing that ferries people about on the weekend. Mulled apple rum and lunch, plus a couple of things from the shop later we headed home considerably poorer! The next day was Sherborne Day, as hectic and relaxed as ever and probably the last at Toby's as they're planning to move. I might host next year, but I'll see how next  Christmas is likely to pan out first.

The party went well, or at least everyone said so which is as good. A particularly tasty vegan chilli kept everyone fed and enough booze for 100 (plus everything we have anyway) kept everyone well-oiled. I've been left with more than enough for Christmas, New Year and beyond in that regard. It was a good opportunity for everyone to do their bereavement duty (cynic, me?) but actually I think we all had a good time and remembered how much we like each other's company. We'll see what happens next.

Steve's had his knee done at last! It seems to have gone well but he can't drive for six weeks so they can't do the Swansea game on NYD which would have been nice. But the main thing is his knee is fixed and he's very happy about it. And on the NHS too.

This useless laptop is losing power again so I'll cut this short and write again after Boxing Day when all the hoo-har is over. Dreading tomorrow a bit but again I think the necessary controlled mayhem will disallow any maudlin spells, or at least delay them. God, I nearly forgot the pudding! I'm trying really hard but I don't know if I can do this again next year. Maybe the passing of another year will make it easier but I'm not sure. I'm not sure of anything much to be honest. Certainly not keen on NYE this year.

Night love, merry Christmas (ha ha)
